Hazem Elariny, MD, Ph.D. 

Dr. Hazeem Elariny obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and earned his Medical Doctorate from the Louisiana State University Medical School in 1990. He completed his residency in General Surgery between 1990 and 1996 at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, he also devoted himself to the investigation of the molecular biologic mechanisms of breast cancer, atherosclerosis, transplant rejection, and HIV infection at the Richard Freeman Research Institute in New Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Elariny received special recognition from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Louisiana State University, New Orleans for his exemplary work. Upon completing his residency, Dr. Elariny practiced surgery for three years in Louisiana, and continued his research concomitantly. He received an appointment to the Medical Staff at Inova Alexandria & Fairfax Hospitals and Arlington Hospital, and he joined Advanced Laparoscopic and General Surgery Associates, in Arlington, Virginia, in 1999. Dr. Elariny is currently the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia.

Dr. Elariny is a Board Certified General Surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is an active member in: the American College of Surgeons, the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Society of American Gastroenterologic Surgeons, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, the Southern Society for Oncology, the American Medical Association, and the Southern Medical Association.

Dr. Elariny is the first surgeon in the Greater Washington, DC Metropolitan, Northern Virginia, and Southern Maryland areas to perform Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass for morbid obesity. Currently Dr. Elariny, and Advanced Laparoscopic and General Surgery Associates, are providing the widest range of technically advanced laparoscopic procedures in the Greater Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area. These procedures range from laparoscopic splenectomy to gastrectomy, colectomy, gastric bypass, resection of choledochal cyst, liver biopsy, management of ruptured ectopic pregnancy, simple cholecystectomy and appendectomy. Dr. Elariny has performed the largest single-surgeon series of laparoscopic duodenal switch procedures in the world (currently approximately 1000 cases) with the lowest known conversion (.2%), morbidity (not yet calculated) and mortality (0%) rates.
