BioSketch: Dr. van Hoek received her Bachelors degree from the University of Victoria, Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology. She received her PhD from the University of Virginia, Department of Microbiology. |
| |
Academic Background:
Dr. van Hoek teaches several classes within the MMB and BIOL departments. These include BIOD 703, BIOL 690, BIOS 702 and BIOL 305 (Sp 06). |
| |
Research Interests:
Dr. van Hoek conducts her research in the Department of Molecular and Microbiology and the National Center for Biodefense and Infectious Diseases with a focus on tularemia and host-pathogen interactions. She is currently pursuing research projects exploring the pathogenesis of Francisella tularensis and related species and strains in the mammalian host. Techniques of cell biology, microbiology and proteomics are used to address questions of how this organism infects its host, and what factors cause it to be virulent. Students from the Biodefense, Bioscience and Biology graduate programs with laboratory experience are encouraged to inquire about laboratory rotations and research projects. Currently available rotation projects involve proteomic, microarray and bioinformatic analysis. |
