From 1976 till 1992, as Department Head and Project Manager, he performed research in the biological warfare program of the former Soviet Union at the Vector and Obolensk facilities, where he participated in a number of research projects, including new approaches to genetically modify biological weapon agents. He was also involved in the Soviet program to develop genetic strains that were resistant to conventional preventive and therapeutic measures. Dr. Popov is widely published, having written more than sixty papers in open Soviet-era journals. He has been awarded the USSR Ministry of Microbiological Industry Award for Outstanding Achievements and the USSR Government Award, the Order of Honor for research and development for recombinant interferon technology. Dr. Popov graduated from the Novosibirsk University, Russia and received his postdoctoral training at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, UK. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and an Sc.D. in Microbiology
