4. Chat Sessions

This week you have been exposed to health systems ranking. The articles this week focus on the advantages and weaknesses in comparing health systems in the developed countries with robust health systems as well as measuring the health systems in developing nations. This week I challenge you and your group to step outside of the reading material and apply what you have read to two vastly different scenarios.

4.1. What factors in the French healthcare system made it number 1? What rules were applied to bring this honor to France? Describe some of the differences between the US and France that would keep the US from flat out adopting the French healthcare system.

4.2. Congratulations! You and your group have been hired as a think tank to serve as health policy advisors to members of the US Senate. (You knew your degree from George Mason University would enhance your life and your career!) Your senators are very upset about the score of the USA in this world-wide ranking and they want answers. How do you advise them?

4.3. Put yourself in my seat at the research center and cholera hospital. Can’t you see the brightly colored saris drying on the laundry line below and stray dogs sunbathing and hear the rickshaws and fish venders going by? You are attempting to pioneer a health systems research strategy for the organization, the country and the South Asia region. What do these measures of health systems mean to you? Are they helpful? Are they realistic? (By the way, Dr. Larson is my Division Head…so make it good.)
