4. Chat Sessions

This week the articles cover an important issue: the global pandemic HIV/AIDS. A tremendous amount of attention, effort and resources are aimed at stopping/reducing the spread of HIV and ameliorating the disease’s impact on nations and societies. These questions may seem brief, but I challenge you and your group to evaluate them in depth.

4.1. Discuss the issue of informed consent in HIV testing—both from a perspective in the US healthcare system and in the perspective of developing nations. What are the advantages, disadvantages and the dangers?

4.2. When viewed in the context of the Global Fund for AIDS, Malaria and TB, there seem to be ample financial resources and treatments available to turn the tide in the spread of AIDS. What do you think is happening?

4.3. Consider the impact on the health system of a developing nation when a tremendous amount of resources are introduced with a focus on one or two diseases. Is this intervention beneficial to the healthcare system?

4.4. Each of the articles discusses issues of importance to the United States. As a group, address these issues and try to think of the root cause and pose possible solutions.
