Recently Asked Questions
Question: I can't find information on how much time you have to prepare for the survey to ensure compliance or the specific requirements for accreditation and licensure. Answer: Please contact the instructor directly for answer to this question. Question: I apologize for the repeats of my questions, but they didn't show up the first time; obviously there's a delay time I didn't anticpate. Answer: Sorry there was a bug in the system and the answers were not being posted correctly. The system has been fixed and I will ask Professor Ismail to answer the questions shortly. This answer was provided by Alemi. Question: This question seemed to disappear too so please forgive me if it shows up again...twice. The inspector I followed at Loudoun Healthcare carried only a clipboard and pad; no official checklists, nothing! Yet she didn't miss a beat from expiration dates, to licenses, to staffing, to education (which she asked about on every unit I might add). She was an RN, but my question is, what kind of training do the inspectors go through? Not that I'm in the market for a job.... Answer: Inspectors receive intensive training in the standards, their rational and elements of performance and scoring system. Also, they are exposed to education in the survey process and the new approaches used by the JCAHO. More important is the field experience and the hundreds of cases they see and people they meet. They learn from their own experience and from their peers as well. Question: This question seemed to disappear too so please forgive me if it shows up again...twice. Answer: Response was provided earlier Question: What are the education/training requirements for state inspection surveyors? I was amazed when following the nurse surveyor at Loudoun; she had a clipboard with a pad of paper but no obvious checklist. She would go from checking licenses to asking about education; she obviously knew her stuff. What's the training for this obviously all-encompassing job? Not that I'm in the market or anything....:) Answer: We teach a course on the accreditation process and the survey process. It is HSCI 547. The instructor for that course will be better equiped to answer your question. Question: Ok, my question disappeared the first time so here we go again:I followed a state inspector around Loudoun Healthcare recently and in the ED she was very adamant about having a hard copy of the on call physicians available, even thougn the nurse manager stated the list was on the computer and she could draw it up for the inspector's verification. Was this picky, or what's the rationale? Answer: No that was not picky, the surveyor has the right to ask this question because the computer may be down at any time, also not everyone has access to the computer especially the temps
Suggestions for Improvement
You can add your suggestions or read below suggestions made by others:
Suggestion: The lecture was thorough and covered all aspects of state licensure. The information is valuable and came in handy for me since my outpatient facility is in the midst of preparing for renewal of licensure as well as credentialing for AAAHC. I feel I am more confident now to deal with issues at hand. Suggestion: The lecture was clear and easy to follow. Suggestion: Just one minor correction. In the "general level nursery" section it is listed as "General Level Nursing"; this was a bit confusing till it was obvious we were talking about the nursery. Also I'm finding that I get kicked out of this screen if I accidently hit a key and sometimes have to start all over; not your fault Dr. Ismail, but maybe something you might report to the informatics folks. For something I thought would be dry, I loved the lecture; you present the basic facts without belabouring ad infinitum, and it is fascinating. Never though I'd say that! :) Additional Reading Materials
