Step 3 - Choosing Cultural Questions

This page contains a planning form to help you research appropriate resources for Step 3 in the Cultural Inquiry Process.  

  • Fill out the form and use the Submit Answers button at the bottom of the form to email it to yourself. 

  • When you receive the form in your inbox, keep it to help you follow through with your research plans.

  • You may forward the form from your inbox to your instructor(s) if you would like them to review your answers.  

  • If your research plans shift or expand, you can fill out a new form and submit it.

NOTE:

  • You must use your GMU email account to email the form.  If you have not activated your email account, go to http://mail.gmu.edu and click the Activating My Account button. (You'll need to supply your GMU student ID and pin number as part of the activation process.)

  • If you do not intend to use your GMU email account on a regular basis you can modify the account to automatically forward any incoming messages to your regular mailbox. (See the instructions in the Student Technology Guide.)    

 

Think about your puzzlement as you begin to search for resources that will help you choose relevant cultural questions. You may want to identify a few potential questions and search for resources that will help you consider each question and choose the ones that are most relevant for your cultural inquiry.

Locating Resources

1) What strategies will you use to locate appropriate print or on-line resources?

Find resources recommended by classmates, colleagues, or instructors
Follow links from the CIP Resources section
Use a university library database or search tool
Use an on-line search engine such as Google, Yahoo, etc.

  • to develop ideas for possible cultural influences?
  • to look at general discussions of relevant theory and research?
  • to examine studies of similar students or groups?

  • What decisions or approaches do you need to justify?
  • What topics or issues need supporting evidence or information?
  • How can you connect your decisions to other relevant theories or research?
